Serving a self defeating military purpose imposed by conquerors, Barceloneta was built in the 17th century. Although shadeless, this is an interesting area to walk, relax, play volley ball and soccer by the beach, swim and get some color in good weather.
There are showers and toilets to rinse off the sand, as well as bars and fish restaurants in this old fishing neighborhood. Watch out for hustlers and street vendors though.
