Prompted to visit the Gruyères area by its famous name, one might be surprised by the picturesque Medieval town which is tacked away proudly on a hill with the base of the Alps as a backdrop.
So, besides cheese, what else is there? The Gruyères as well as the Saint-Germain Castle (chateau-gruyeres.ch) to name a few. As if time has not gone by, the walled town of Gruyères with its pedestrian cobbled streets, is well preserved, safeguarding its authentic character. Also worthy of a visit, the Houses at Rue du Bourg 7, 47 and 39, which are listed as Swiss heritage sites of national significance. Note their Medieval architecture.
And to get back to cheese, the cheese manufacturing museum at the base, is an interesting stop (and shop).
