"Massive fortress at Marseille's Old Port constructed by Louis XIV"

Dating back to the 17^th century, the massive Fort Saint-Jean at Marseille's Old Port was constructed by Louis XIV on the premises belonging to the Military Order of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John.

Their purpose was to protect the city's rulers against foreign and domestic enemies and invasions. It had a significant role in many wars and uprisings throughout the years.

In an effort to upgrade the area, the fort has become part of MuCEM (Museum of Civilisations from Europe and the Mediterranean), with the tower of King René (a museum for the fortress' history), the DRASSM (a documentation center) and the building of Georges Henri Rivière which will be used as a gallery.
