The Pope’s Palace in Avingon sits in front of a big square and there is plenty of space to move back and let its scale sink in. Still though, the massiveness of the Palais des Papes is hard to comprehend.
It used to be a fortress, a palace, and the papal residence and papal library during the 14th century. Due to its size and history, the Pope’s Palace is considered a very significant Gothic evidence of the power enjoyed by the clergy of the time.
