"The story behind the mythical hero depicted on this statue is fascinating."

Situated in front of the Antwerp City Hall, the Brabo Fountain bronze statue is more of a story telling piece rather than art.

The statue depicts a a mythical Roman soldier Silvius Brabo, who supposedly killed a giant named Druon Antigoon. As the story goes, this giant cut off sailors' hands who refused to pay him money to cross the bridge over the river Scheldt. So Brabo cut off the giant's hand in revenge and threw it in the river.

The story has allegorical meaning referring to the city's independence and free trade. If this is too much information for you, just enjoy the Grote Markt and don't worry about it.
