The city's stunning buildings are evident of Ypres' prosperity and wealth during the Medieval ages, as it used to be an international center for cloth trading. Nowadays, it is a small city of around 40,000 habitants.
The city witnessed three major First World War battles, the most famous being the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. A reminder of the Ypres' troubled past lies in its entrance with the memorial monument dedicated to those lost in battle. A lot of visitors come to pay respect to the brave Belgians.
