Charlemange's previous palace residence has given its place to the town's most important building, the Aachen City Hall.
The Gothic building with the statues of past rulers adorning the north facade dates back to the 14th century, but it was later on changed to a baroque style in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Its walls have seen everything from Coronations to weddings and you can take a tour inside the Aachen City Hall, preferably on weekdays, when it is less crowded.
